LGES launches “B.around” battery management business

LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES), South Korea’s top electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturer, has introduced a new battery management total solution (BMTS) service called “B.around” along with a new logo. This move comes in response to safety concerns in the domestic market following a major fire that started in a parked Mercedes-Benz EQE model in Incheon in August, spreading to over 100 nearby vehicles.

In a bid to promote safer battery use, LGES announced last month its foray beyond battery manufacturing with the launch of the BMTS as a business. The BMTS leverages battery-related data to analyze the battery’s condition, ensure optimal performance, and enhance safety. Setting it apart from conventional battery management solution (BMS) services, LGES’ BMTS offers advanced features such as safety and battery degradation diagnostics software, tailored solutions for software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms, and more.

The BMTS includes functions like measuring voltage, current, and temperature of batteries, continuous monitoring of various conditions for safe and optimized battery use. The B.around service provides software, hardware, and complete solutions for SDVs, with software categorized as safety diagnostics software and battery degradation diagnostics software.

LGES is collaborating with industry leaders, including Qualcomm Technologies, to develop new technologies for SDV platform-optimized solutions using SoC, cloud, and AI computing technologies. The BMTS technologies are based on empirical data from analyzing over 130,000 battery cells and 1,000 battery modules, with the company holding over 8,000 BMS-related patents.

The company is actively promoting Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) business using its core BMTS technologies and battery lifecycle data. Brandon Kim, head of BaaS Business Development Department at LGES, stated, “LGES is the only battery manufacturer to provide a management service for the battery’s entire lifecycle, including BMS solutions. Like B.around’s brand vision, our goal is to always be close by so that we can provide differentiated customer value based on the technological capabilities we have accumulated over the decades.”

The B.around brand is set to be extended to the BaaS segment, further enhancing LGES’ commitment to ensuring safe and optimized battery use throughout the lifecycle.
