Lincoln has issued a recall for 35,328 Navigator full-size SUVs due to a potential fire hazard related to the exterior mirror lights. Specifically, the LED puddle lamps on the exterior mirrors, which project the Lincoln logo onto the ground as part of the welcome lighting feature, are at risk of short circuiting.
The affected models are from the 2015-2017 range, and the issue stems from the potting material used on the lamps not properly adhering to the wire terminals. This could allow water to penetrate the lamp and come into contact with the printed circuit boards, leading to corrosion and potential short circuits. The system designed to check for these issues was originally set up for incandescent lamps, not LEDs, which could result in the problem going undetected.
While there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue, Lincoln is taking proactive measures to address the problem. Instead of repairing the lamps, dealers will be disconnecting them free of charge for owners. Those who have already paid for related work may be eligible for reimbursement.
Owner notification letters are set to be mailed out on March 24th, and owners can also contact Ford’s customer service department at 866-436-7332 for more information, referencing recall number 25S08. Additionally, information can be found on Lincoln’s recall website.
The LED lamps were originally introduced as part of a 2015 model year refresh of the Navigator, which was later redesigned in 2018. Another redesign is planned for 2025. It’s important for owners of affected vehicles to take action promptly to ensure the safety of their vehicles and prevent any potential risks associated with the faulty exterior mirror lights.
