Madison, Wisconsin has taken a major step towards achieving its zero-net carbon goal by adding two Class 8 electric trucks to its garbage fleet. These Mack Electric LR HDEVs are the first of their kind in America’s dairy land, with plans to add two more in the near future.
The city’s decision to electrify its heavy truck and equipment fleet is part of its commitment to reducing emissions and creating a cleaner environment for its residents. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway emphasized the importance of transitioning to electric vehicles, especially for vehicles like garbage trucks that traverse every block in the city, emitting diesel fumes along the way.
The Mack Electric LR HDEVs are equipped with a powerful pair of electric motors that deliver 400 combined kW (536 hp) through a 2-speed Mack Powershift transmission. With a peak torque output of 4,051 lb-ft, these trucks offer more power than previous electric models. The 376 kWh batteries can be fully charged in under two hours at 150 kW, allowing the trucks to operate efficiently throughout the day.
Charging stations provided by ChargePoint at the city’s truck depot ensure that the trucks are ready for their routes each day. Mayor Rhodes-Conway highlighted the city’s progress in electrifying its fleet, with over 100 full electric vehicles, 150 hybrids, and plans for 62 new electric buses for the bus rapid transit system.
The introduction of electric garbage trucks in Madison is part of a growing trend among municipalities across the country. These vehicles offer numerous advantages, not just in terms of cost savings and environmental impact, but also in improving the quality of life for residents and workers in the city. Madison’s commitment to electrifying its fleet will serve as a model for other cities looking to transition to zero-emission technologies.
As Madison continues to demonstrate the benefits of electric vehicles in real-world conditions, it will pave the way for more sustainable transportation solutions in the future. The addition of these Mack Electric LR HDEVs is just the beginning of Madison’s journey towards a cleaner, greener future.
