Man in the MIRA: What really happens in a full Autocar road test?

The controller’s question hangs in the air as we prepare to test the Maserati MC20 on the track. Lane’s ambitious goal of hitting speeds of 150mph is met with caution due to the presence of standing water. Despite the less than ideal conditions, we push forward, knowing that time is of the essence with the car needing to be returned to Maserati’s HQ.

After the necessary checks and radio communication, our testing day kicks off with fuel economy tests, where we meticulously circle the track at a set speed. The mundane routine is quickly forgotten as we move on to the ‘everyday’ economy test, navigating the track at a snail’s pace.

As the sun breaks through the clouds and the road begins to dry, we seize the opportunity to head to the Dunlop circuit. Lane expertly sets up the VBox timing gear, a stark contrast to the high-performance machine we are about to put through its paces.

With helmet in place, we hit the track, Lane effortlessly maneuvering the MC20 through a series of throttle, brake, and turn sequences. The car’s responsiveness to our aggressive driving style is put to the test, revealing its true capabilities in a controlled environment.

After a rigorous session of pushing the car to its limits, we pause for a photo op on MIRA’s mile straight, allowing our photographer to capture the MC20 in all its glory.

Despite the challenges faced throughout the day, the Maserati MC20 has proven to be a formidable machine, showcasing its performance and handling capabilities on the track. Our testing has provided valuable insights into the car’s behavior, setting the stage for a comprehensive review of this Italian beauty.
