Maxus EV pickup truck becomes a diesel in China and will launch December 18

SAIC, a well-known automotive manufacturer, made headlines earlier this year when they showcased their new electric pickup truck, the Maxus eTerron 9, at the IAA Hanover Auto Show in Germany. However, in a surprising turn of events, the pickup truck has now been transformed into a diesel version and is scheduled to be launched on December 18 in China.

The Maxus eTerron 9, also known as the Maxus Interstellar X in China, will be the first model to feature SAIC’s new Ï€Plus 2.5T diesel engine, delivering a maximum power of 165 kW and a peak torque of 520NM. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, this diesel engine promises a robust performance for the Interstellar X.

Initially unveiled as the GST concept at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, the truck was envisioned as an electric vehicle with a focus on outdoor activities, featuring a large drone and mountain bikes in the back. However, the production version that launched in Germany in September was also an EV. The sudden switch to a diesel engine has raised eyebrows among automotive enthusiasts.

Visually, the diesel version of the Interstellar X sports an imposing grill at the front, while the EV version has a more enclosed front design with a different light setup. Despite this difference, both versions share similar dimensions, with a length of 5500mm, width of 2005mm, height of 1860mm, and a wheelbase of 3300mm. Additionally, there is a larger version of the Interstellar X with a length of 5630mm, as well as an off-road variant equipped with a diesel engine and a length of 5620mm.

The Interstellar X boasts a body-on-frame construction and is equipped with double wishbone independent suspension, air suspension, and three mechanical differential locks. Off-road versions offer a choice of rear suspension setups and have a towing capacity ranging from 3300kg to 3495kg. The regular version can tow up to 3500kg.

Inside the cabin, the pickup truck features dual 12.3-inch screens, a JBL sound system, a rearview streaming mirror, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and 50W wireless phone charging capabilities. These premium features add to the overall comfort and convenience of the Interstellar X.

It remains unclear whether only the diesel version will be launched in China on December 18 or if the EV version will also make its debut on the same date. For more information on this exciting development, stay tuned to Autohome and Dongchedi for the latest updates on the Maxus Interstellar X.
