Unveiling the Skyactiv-X Engine: A Closer Look

When it comes to the technologically innovative measures employed by Mazda’s Skyactiv-X engine, one might expect a revolutionary driving experience. However, contrary to initial expectations, the Skyactiv-X engine feels surprisingly ordinary during day-to-day use.

Our road test of the Skyactiv-X revealed some interesting insights. At idle and during acceleration in the lower rev range, there is a slight diesel-like roughness to its timbre, which transitions into a standard four-cylinder buzz as the engine revs up to its limit. While the engine is ground-breaking in its design, it lacks the distinctive character one might expect.

One notable aspect of the Skyactiv-X’s power delivery is its ability to operate smoothly at low revs, giving the impression of torque without actually delivering significant acceleration. To access more power, downshifting and pushing the engine to its redline is necessary. While the engine offers linear acceleration and good throttle response, the long gearing optimized for economy limits the sense of high-rev vigor.

Performance testing revealed that the Skyactiv-X engine falls short in comparison to rivals like the Mercedes A200 and Volkswagen Golf. Despite later versions boasting additional horsepower, the raw performance remains relatively unchanged.

For those seeking a more accessible torque, the 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G may be a preferable option. With ample torque and improved acceleration, the Skyactiv-G engine provides a more engaging driving experience. The engine’s refinement levels reflect a classic four-cylinder buzz, reminiscent of older compact cars.

In terms of fuel efficiency, both the Skyactiv-X and Skyactiv-G engines offer respectable returns. With the potential for close to 50mpg in mixed driving conditions and over 55mpg on longer trips, the Mazda 3 proves to be an economical choice.

One standout feature of the Mazda 3 is its manual gearbox, particularly appealing to enthusiasts. The precise and smooth gear shifts enhance the driving experience, providing a level of engagement that surpasses many competitors.
