BYD recently introduced the Atto 1 in Indonesia, marking it as one of the most affordable electric vehicles available on the market. Priced at just $12,000 (IDR 195 million), the Atto 1 is a rebadged version of BYD’s popular Seagull EV in China. This compact electric car is also known as the Dolphin Mini and Dolphin Surf in other global markets.
The Atto 1 comes in two variants: the Standard Range Dynamic and the Long Range Premium. The Standard Range Dynamic model is equipped with a 30.08 kWh BYD Blade battery, offering a NEDC range of 300 km (186 miles). On the other hand, the Long Range Premium model features a larger 38.88 kWh battery, providing an extended NEDC range of 380 km (236 miles).
Inside, the Atto 1 boasts a modern and high-tech smart cockpit with a 10.1″ intelligent touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a 7″ digital driver’s instrument display. The Long Range Premium version also includes a wireless charging pad and a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel.
Despite its compact size, measuring at 3,959 mm long, 1,720 mm wide, and 1,590 mm tall, the Atto 1 offers a comfortable interior space. The launch of the Atto 1 in Indonesia marks BYD’s third electric vehicle introduction in the country, following the Seal, Atto 3 SUV, and Dolphin models.
With Indonesia being the largest automotive market in Southeast Asia, the introduction of affordable electric vehicles like the Atto 1 is expected to boost the adoption of EVs in the region. The government’s new policies supporting local EV production have also contributed to the rise in EV market share, which doubled to 10% in the first half of the year.
In response to the growing demand for electric vehicles, Toyota, a major player in the Indonesian auto market, announced plans to start locally producing EVs by the end of 2025. This shift towards electric mobility reflects the changing landscape of the automotive industry in Indonesia.
Overall, the launch of the Atto 1 in Indonesia signals a significant step towards making electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience, driving the transition towards sustainable transportation in the region.
