Mercedes-AMG GT XX smashes electric car distance record

Mercedes has once again made history with the GT XX, a groundbreaking electric supercar that pays homage to the iconic C111 prototypes of the 1970s. The GT XX’s record-breaking performance is attributed to its advanced electric drivetrain, which features two axial-flux motors at the rear and a third unit at the front, all operating on an 800-volt architecture and producing a combined 1341bhp.

One of the key factors that contributed to the GT XX’s record-breaking success is its energy replenishment strategy, which allows the prototype to charge at rates between 850kW and 900kW. This rapid charging capability enables ultra-short stopping times and ensures that the GT XX is always ready to perform at its peak.

The GT XX is equipped with a cylindrical cell battery developed in-house, with input from Mercedes-AMG’s Formula 1 powertrain division at Brixworth. The 114kWh oil-immersed pack uses direct liquid cooling with 40 litres of coolant maintained at a constant temperature. This innovative oil-immersion technology provides superior heat transfer compared to conventional systems, allowing for ultra-high charging rates without degradation. In fact, the GT XX can theoretically achieve a 249-mile top-up in just five minutes.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe expressed his excitement about the GT XX’s performance, stating that “enormous performance and extremely fast charging were always available and made these records possible.” He also emphasized that future electric models from Mercedes-AMG will offer the same level of performance and charging capabilities, ensuring that customers will truly experience the essence of AMG.

Overall, the GT XX is a testament to Mercedes’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology and setting new records in the automotive industry. With its impressive performance and cutting-edge features, the GT XX is set to revolutionize the electric supercar market and establish itself as a true icon in the world of high-performance vehicles.
