Mercedes-Benz has taken a bold step with the introduction of the new CLA, which features a completely new platform designed specifically for electric vehicles. Unlike previous models like the EQS and EQE, the CLA platform can support both electric and hybrid propulsion systems, allowing for greater flexibility in production and response to market demands.
One of the key innovations in the CLA is the new motor technology, developed in-house and integrated with a silicon-carbide inverter. The main rear motor is paired with a two-speed gearbox, a feature that is rare in the electric vehicle market. While most electric motors have a wide powerband, having multiple gears can improve efficiency and performance at different speeds. Mercedes’ expertise in automatic gearbox technology for combustion engines has allowed them to implement this feature successfully in the CLA.
The CLA will be initially launched in the UK in rear-drive CLA 250+ form, with a four-wheel-drive CLA 350 4Matic variant to follow. The CLA 350 features a synchronous motor on the front axle, which, coupled with a clutch, enhances efficiency. Additionally, there will be an entry-level CLA model equipped with a 58kWh LFP battery to cater to a wider range of customers.
Efficiency is further enhanced by the aerodynamic design of the CLA. With a drag coefficient as low as 0.21 on the base model, even the sportier AMG Line variant with larger wheels maintains an impressive 0.24 coefficient. Aero covers on the wheels and suspension components contribute to the sleek design and improved aerodynamics of the vehicle.
In a test drive, the CLA 250+ in AMG Line trim achieved an impressive efficiency of 4.8 miles per kilowatt-hour, translating to a real-world range of 408 miles. The dual-motor CLA 350 performed similarly well, showcasing the efficiency of Mercedes’ electric drivetrain technology.
Overall, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA represents a significant leap forward in electric vehicle technology. With its innovative platform, advanced motor technology, and efficient aerodynamics, the CLA sets a new standard for performance and range in the EV market.
