Mercedes-Benz has issued a third recall for loose sunroof panels that could detach while driving, posing a safety risk to road users. The latest recall adds 33,456 older models to the previous recall, which included 123,696 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, CLK, E-Class, and CLS models. This recall, classified as 22V-954, was an expansion of a previous recall initiated in December 2022.
The issue with the sunroof panels stems from the adhesive deteriorating over time, causing the glass panel to detach from the vehicle. This could potentially lead to a flying glass panel on the road, increasing the risk of a crash and posing a higher likelihood of injury to individuals. Owners or passengers may notice excessive wind noise or a loosening panel even when the sunroof is closed.
The expanded recall affects a range of Mercedes-Benz models, including the C-Class, CLK, CLS, and E-Class from various years. Owners can expect to receive recall notifications by mail as early as January 18, 2025. Dealers will inspect the panel bonding and replace the sunroof if necessary at no cost to owners. Mercedes-Benz has also stated that they will provide a reimbursement plan for owners who have already had the work done out of pocket.
