MG 3 hybrid 2025 long-term test

The MG 3 Hybrid+ Trophy is a supermini that promises a lot, but does it deliver on its claims? After spending an extended period with this car, here’s our verdict.

When it comes to the MG 3 Hybrid+, it’s clear that MG has made significant improvements over the previous generation. Priced at £20,495, this car competes with the likes of the Renault Clio E-Tech hybrid, offering a compelling alternative for buyers looking for a well-equipped and affordable supermini.

The MG 3 Hybrid+ comes in Trophy trim, which adds a range of advanced driver assistance systems, LED headlights, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, and more. The interior of the car is impressive, with a classy look and decent-quality materials that have been upgraded from the previous model.

One of the standout features of the MG 3 Hybrid+ is its Hybrid+ powertrain, which combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine, an electric motor, and a small battery. With a combined output of 192bhp and 313lb ft of torque, this car offers strong performance, especially in electric-only mode.

However, during our time with the MG 3 Hybrid+, we encountered some issues that dampened our enthusiasm. The three-speed automatic gearbox provided power in distinct waves, and the braking system felt jerky and difficult to modulate. Additionally, the fuel economy fell short of the claimed figures, averaging around 47.0mpg in real-world driving conditions.

Despite these drawbacks, the MG 3 Hybrid+ has its merits. It offers a comfortable ride, practical interior space, and a good level of technology for the price. For buyers looking for a traditional hatchback that is compact, efficient, and affordable, the MG 3 Hybrid+ could be a suitable choice.

In conclusion, while the MG 3 Hybrid+ may not be as refined or sophisticated as some of its rivals, it still offers a compelling package for the price. Ultimately, whether you choose the MG 3 Hybrid+ over a competitor like the Renault Clio E-Tech hybrid will depend on your priorities and preferences.
