Mk1 Ford Escort back in production with 296bhp and modern tech

A New Revival: The Boreham Motorworks Ford Escort RS

A new UK engineering specialist has brought back the iconic Ford Escort RS with the full backing of the car-making giant. Coventry-based Boreham Motorworks has developed a unique version of the Escort RS, allowed to use the original name and Ford badges.

Unlike many other restomod projects, this new Escort RS is not based on an existing chassis. It is an all-new car, with each example receiving a chassis number continuing on from the original production run.

The foundation of this revival is the two-door Escort RS body that was originally produced by Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations in Aveley, Essex. Boreham Motorworks digitally recreated the shell and enhanced it for better handling, adding additional bracing and widening the wheel arches. The rear axle is now made from a combination of aluminium and titanium, and the rear dampers have been repositioned for improved performance.

Two engine options are available for this modern revival. The first is a reworked version of the legendary Twin Cam engine that brought the Escort to victory in competitions, now upsized to 1845cc with fuel injection for a total of 182bhp. The second option is a 2.1-litre four-cylinder engine with forged steel conrods and a billet crankshaft, producing 296bhp and capable of revving to an impressive 10,000rpm.

Designed to deliver a driving experience reminiscent of the original Escort RS, this revival model excludes modern features like power steering, anti-lock brakes, and traction control. It is equipped with coilover suspension and an automatic torque-biasing limited-slip differential to provide “controllable and predictable” oversteer.
