Volkswagen’s Future Plans for the ID 4
While the company has not officially announced any plans to change the name of the ID 4, there have been discussions about the possibility. Volkswagen’s brand chief, Jürgen Schäfer, hinted to Autocar that iconic names like Tiguan and Golf will continue to play a significant role in the company’s lineup, even as they transition to electric vehicles. He emphasized the importance of retaining these well-established names that have been synonymous with Volkswagen for years.
It has long been anticipated that an electric version of the Tiguan would be introduced as part of Volkswagen’s future product lineup. The combustion-powered Tiguan has been a top-selling model for Volkswagen globally, and plans for an electric equivalent were originally slated for a launch in 2025 or 2026, aligning with the upgraded ID 4 release.
Technical development chief Kai Grünitz confirmed in a recent interview with Autocar that the upcoming ID 4 will adopt the new design language introduced with the ID 2All concept. This new design will give the ID 4 a familial resemblance to the ID 2, with a lower and more squat stance for a sleeker appearance.
Inside, the facelifted ID 3 and ID 4 models will feature fully revised interiors with a new dashboard and user interface. One notable change will be the reintroduction of physical buttons and knobs in place of digital display-based controls and sliders. This shift towards a more traditional interface was influenced by the positive reception of the ID 2All concept.
An insider revealed, “We’re going to bring back a round knob for the volume control. If a design element has proven to be effective and user-friendly over the years, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel.”
