The Return of the Honda Prelude: A Look at the Hybrid Sports Coupé

The highly anticipated return of the Honda Prelude has been making waves as the hybrid sports coupé has been spotted testing for the first time. Project leaders have hinted at the possibility of a manual-style transmission, adding to the excitement surrounding the revival of this iconic model.

Honda is set to bring back the beloved Prelude after a hiatus of more than two decades, with the new model slated for release in 2026. Based on the popular Civic platform, the Prelude will showcase Honda’s electrified technologies with a 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain.

Having already been unveiled as a show car, the Prelude was recently seen undergoing testing in the German countryside. Despite being camouflaged, it’s evident that the production version will stay true to the striking design of the concept.

While details on the technical specifications remain scarce, rumors suggest that Honda is considering a manual gearbox to cater to the sporty nature of the Prelude. Project lead Tomoyuki Yamagami expressed a strong focus on driving enjoyment, stating, “the joy of driving is a top priority for us” and hinting at the possibility of a manual transmission option.

Addressing the speculation about a manual gearbox, Yamagami shared his personal affinity for manual vehicles, highlighting the potential for a fun and engaging driving experience with such a setup in the Prelude.

Although Honda has offered manual transmissions in previous hybrid models like the Civic and Insight, integrating one into the current e:HEV hybrid system poses some challenges. The e:HEV system relies heavily on electric motors for propulsion, making the inclusion of a manual gearbox a complex endeavor.
