Peugeot is currently contemplating the revival of the Peugeot 208 GTi as an electric hot hatch, according to new CEO Alain Favey. The iconic GTi badge has been absent from the Peugeot lineup since the second-generation 208 was introduced in 2019, and the last GTi model, the 308 GTi, was discontinued in 2021.
Initially, the Peugeot Sport Engineered (PSE) sub-brand was expected to fill the void left by the GTi models. However, with the discontinuation of the 508 PSE variant in the UK, there is now a potential opportunity for the return of the GTi badge. Favey expressed his eagerness to connect the Peugeot brand with its rich heritage and past, hinting at the possible revival of the GTi moniker.
If Peugeot decides to move forward with an e-208 GTi, it is likely to share the same platform as the Lancia Ypsilon HF hatch and Abarth 600e crossover, both of which utilize the e-CMP platform that the e-208 is built on. These models boast 237bhp sent to the front wheels and feature a Torsen limited-slip differential for improved performance.
Furthermore, the potential introduction of an e-208 GTi could pave the way for a hot version of the Vauxhall Corsa Electric, as the two models are closely related. However, the commercial viability of an electric hot hatch remains to be seen, especially considering that both the Corsa and 208 are expected to be replaced by next-generation models built on Stellantis’s new STLA Small platform in the near future.
Overall, the prospect of a modern, electric iteration of the iconic Peugeot 208 GTi is exciting for enthusiasts and fans of the brand. With a focus on heritage and performance, Peugeot could be on the brink of reintroducing a beloved classic in a new, electrifying form. Stay tuned for updates on this potential development in the Peugeot lineup.
