BMW M Boss Discusses Future of Electric M Cars

BMW M division boss, Frank van Meel, recently shared his thoughts on the future of electric M cars, drawing parallels to the transition to four-wheel drive in the past. Van Meel expressed confidence in the dynamic capabilities of electric M cars, despite the secrecy surrounding their development.

Van Meel highlighted the importance of the quad-motor powertrain arrangement being tested in prototypes, which allows for full four-wheel torque vectoring. This technology aims to maintain the precision and handling characteristics that define M cars, even in the electric realm.

Central to this new powertrain setup is the “Hand of God,” now renamed the “Heart of Joy” for electric M cars. This central control unit plays a crucial role in managing power delivery to each wheel, enabling a new level of vehicle dynamics and weight management.

Van Meel emphasized the potential of torque vectoring between multiple electric motors to create a sensation of “perceived lightness,” counteracting the inherent weight of electric vehicles. This aligns with similar sentiments expressed by Alpine CEO Philippe Krief, highlighting the transformative impact of this technology.

Looking ahead, BMW M is committed to developing bespoke components for its electric drivetrains, building on its tradition of enhancing standard BMW components for high-performance applications. This approach ensures that electric M cars will continue to deliver the level of performance and driving experience expected from the brand.

As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, BMW M is at the forefront of developing electric performance vehicles that uphold the legacy of the iconic M brand. Van Meel’s insights offer a glimpse into the future of electric M cars and the innovative technologies that will shape their driving dynamics.
