BMW has recently confirmed that they plan to offer the next-generation M3 with a gasoline engine, despite the ongoing push towards electrification in the automotive industry. The German automaker’s engineers are already hard at work ensuring that the straight-six engine in the M3 will be compliant with upcoming emissions regulations.
In an interview with Bimmer Today, BMW M boss Frank van Meel reassured enthusiasts that the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine will continue to power future M3 models as long as there is demand for it. Van Meel emphasized that BMW is committed to keeping the gas-powered M3 in its lineup for the foreseeable future.
While BMW is also working on an electric version of the M3, which will ride on the Neue Klasse platform and feature four electric motors with up to 1,341 horsepower, the company is clear that the combustion engine will not be phased out anytime soon. Van Meel stated, “If customers say, ‘Even though an M3 is significantly faster electrically than the combustion engine that is the benchmark today, I still want a combustion engine,’ then we will not withhold this offer from them.”
However, the future of the gas-powered M3 ultimately lies in the hands of consumers. If BMW M fans continue to show interest in the traditional combustion engine, the company will keep producing it alongside the electric M3.
It is important to note that both the next-generation combustion M3 and its electric counterpart are still several years away from hitting showrooms. BMW is set to launch its first Neue Klasse model next year, with the performance variants expected to follow in 2027 or 2028.
Overall, BMW’s commitment to offering a gas-powered M3 demonstrates the company’s dedication to providing a diverse range of options for enthusiasts. Whether customers opt for the traditional combustion engine or the cutting-edge electric powertrain, BMW promises to deliver a thrilling driving experience in the next-generation M3.
