Mitsubishi Electric Mobility and AISIN have announced a new business partnership to develop products for next-generation xEVs, signaling a shift from their previous plan to establish a joint venture. This decision comes in response to the evolving needs of vehicle electrification and the strategic reallocation of corporate resources.
Initially, in May of this year, Mitsubishi Electric Group and AISIN had agreed to establish a joint venture company to handle products for next-generation electric vehicles. However, this agreement has now been terminated.
With the increasing diversity in electrification requirements among car manufacturers, Mitsubishi Electric Mobility and AISIN have opted for a collaborative agreement to address the current market demands effectively. Under this new partnership, the two companies will work together on a project involving electric drive modules for xEVs, a technology that AISIN has been actively developing.
Upon finalizing the agreement, Mitsubishi Electric Mobility and AISIN plan to commence development immediately. By leveraging their respective technological strengths, they aim to create competitive products that are set to launch in the latter half of the 2020s.
Furthermore, discussions regarding the scope and timing of setting up the joint venture as a framework for future collaboration will continue between the two companies.
In a related development, Mitsubishi Motors had previously signed a memorandum of understanding with Nissan Motor and Honda Motor in August 2024 to explore a framework for advancing intelligence and electrification in automobiles. This collaboration builds upon the agreement signed between Nissan and Honda earlier in the year.
Mitsubishi CEO and president, Takao Kato, emphasized the importance of collaboration with partners in the rapidly changing automotive industry. He stated, “We believe that we can discover new possibilities in a variety of fields through collaboration among the three companies.”
The new partnership between Mitsubishi Electric Mobility and AISIN underscores the industry’s commitment to innovation and technological advancements in the electric vehicle segment. This strategic collaboration is expected to drive further advancements in the development of next-generation xEVs, ultimately benefiting consumers and the automotive industry as a whole.
