The recent announcement by Tesla regarding the launch of the Model Y L has garnered attention from industry leaders in the electric SUV market. Founders of Nio and Li Auto, William Li and Li Xiang respectively, have shared their thoughts on this development, signaling a shift in the landscape of large-space SUVs in China.
William Li, the founder and CEO of Nio, expressed his optimism about the electrification of large-space SUVs, attributing it to advancements in infrastructure and technology. He highlighted Nio’s sub-brand, Onvo’s L90 SUV, as a testament to this trend and encouraged collaboration in driving this transformation forward.
Li Xiang, the founder and CEO of Li Auto, commended Tesla’s Model Y L as a six-seat pure electric SUV deserving of respect. He pointed out the significance of this model for consumers seeking a premium six-seat SUV within the price range of RMB 200,000 to RMB 300,000. Additionally, Li Xiang hinted at the upcoming release of Li Auto’s own six-seat model, the Li i6, in September, catering to a similar market segment.
The Model Y L, as revealed by Tesla, boasts dimensions larger than its five-seat counterpart, measuring 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. While the pricing details for the Model Y L remain undisclosed, industry speculations suggest a price point around RMB 400,000, positioning it as a premium offering in the market.
The unveiling of the Model Y L comes at a time when the six-seat SUV market in China is witnessing heightened competition, with several electric six-seat SUVs entering the scene. Onvo president Shen Fei emphasized the importance of offering a comprehensive solution with the Onvo L90, set to launch soon and cater to diverse user preferences.
Both Nio and Li Auto are gearing up for significant launches in the electric SUV space, with Nio’s L90 scheduled for official release at the end of this month and Li Auto’s Li i8 set for launch on July 29. The market is evolving rapidly, with new entrants and innovative offerings reshaping the landscape of electric vehicles in China.
As the electrification trend gains momentum, consumers can expect a wider range of options in the electric SUV segment, catering to various needs and preferences. The future looks promising for the electric vehicle market in China, with industry leaders driving innovation and competition to new heights.
