Nio may launch special edition Firefly EV in China based on European version next month, report says

Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) is gearing up to introduce a special edition Firefly EV in China, based on the European version of the popular compact hatchback. The launch of this new variant is expected to coincide with the unveiling of the third-generation Nio ES8 at Nio Day 2025 in September.

The Firefly EV has seen a significant increase in production capacity, with monthly output set to reach 5,000 units. This boost in production comes after the completion of renovations to the production line at Nio’s factory in Chuzhou, Anhui province, in July. This upgrade has enabled Firefly to explore larger market opportunities and increase its presence in the electric vehicle market.

Reports suggest that Nio may establish an F4 factory in Chuzhou dedicated to producing Firefly models, although the company has not officially confirmed this. Currently, all Nio models are produced at the F1 and F2 factories in Hefei, Anhui province, with plans for the F3 factory to begin production in September.

The special edition Firefly EV is expected to offer a stiffer suspension for enhanced handling, as well as a unique black paint finish not currently available on existing models. Despite these upgrades, pricing is expected to remain competitive with the current variants, which start at RMB 119,800 ($16,680) in China.

Nio positions the Firefly as a global model, with separate calibrations developed for the Chinese and European markets. The European version prioritizes handling and driving enjoyment, aligning with the preferences of consumers in that region. This focus on agility and playfulness aims to position the Firefly as a strong competitor against established brands like Mercedes-Benz Mini and BMW Smart.

Recent production line renovations at Nio’s Chuzhou factory led to a decline in deliveries in July, with only 2,366 Firefly vehicles delivered compared to 3,932 in June. However, with production capacity ramping up, sales potential is expected to increase in the coming months. This month’s production is estimated at 4,900 units, with plans to increase production by over 10 percent next month.

Overall, the special edition Firefly EV represents Nio’s commitment to innovation and growth in the electric vehicle market. With increased production capacity and a focus on handling and performance, the Firefly is poised to make a significant impact in China and beyond.
