Nio, a prominent electric vehicle (EV) maker, recently celebrated a significant milestone in Shanghai by delivering its 100,000th car in the city, where it has its global headquarters. This achievement was announced by William Li, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Nio, in a Weibo video, showcasing the company’s growth since the delivery of its first Nio ES8 in Shanghai back in 2018.
In the Shanghai car market segment with prices exceeding 300,000 yuan ($41,140), Nio has emerged as the first Chinese brand to reach the impressive milestone of 100,000 units delivered. Since 2024, for every two pure electric vehicles sold in Shanghai above the specified price point, one of them is a Nio vehicle, underscoring the brand’s popularity and market presence in the city.
With a strong presence in Shanghai, Nio boasts 10 car clubs and over 500 user communities, reflecting the brand’s engagement with its customer base in the region. Headquartered in the EV-friendly Jiading district of Shanghai, Nio has witnessed a cumulative delivery of 713,658 units by the end of March, showcasing its growing market share and influence in the city.
Shanghai’s supportive policies for EV adoption, such as offering free green license plates for EV models, have further fueled Nio’s success in the region. In contrast, registering a gasoline or hybrid vehicle in Shanghai requires an auction for a blue plate, with prices starting at a minimum of 94,100 yuan in the latest auction held in March.
Moreover, Shanghai recently expanded its car trade-in subsidy coverage, allowing non-locally registered vehicles to apply for subsidies of up to 15,000 yuan. This new policy opens up opportunities for more vehicle owners to benefit from incentives and promote the transition to cleaner transportation options.
Nio’s extensive network of battery swap stations in Shanghai, totaling 187 stations, has provided over 7.66 million battery swap services, showcasing the brand’s commitment to enhancing user experience and convenience. These stations have been instrumental in driving the adoption of Nio vehicles in Shanghai, with plans for further expansion and profitability in the near future.
The company’s focus on innovation and customer-centric services, such as the development of in-house autonomous driving chip and operating system, reflects Nio’s commitment to advancing the EV industry and collaborating with other players in the market. This dedication to technological advancement and customer satisfaction positions Nio as a key player in the EV market, especially in Shanghai, where the brand has established a strong foothold and continues to grow its presence.
