Nissan Ariya vs Mk1 Leaf: How far have EVs come in a decade?

Nissan Ariya vs Nissan Leaf: A Comparison

When it comes to driving an electric vehicle (EV), maximizing range is often a top priority for many drivers, myself included. In my experience, I typically opt for the Eco mode nine times out of 10. While the Nissan Leaf allows for easy selection of Eco mode with a simple button press that retains the setting for future use, the newer Ariya requires the driver to select Eco mode each time they get behind the wheel.

One notable difference between the two vehicles is the charging capabilities. The Ariya boasts a 22kW AC on-board charger, while the Leaf makes do with a 6.6kW charger. While this discrepancy may seem significant, it is important to consider the technological advancements that have occurred over the years. A decade ago, finding a charger as powerful as the one in the Ariya would have been a rare occurrence.

However, Nissan has made improvements in charging technology with the Ariya. The vehicle now uses the standard CCS plug, a departure from the Chademo plug favored by Japanese manufacturers in the past. Additionally, the Ariya features a charging port located at the rear of the vehicle, eliminating the need for a front-facing flap that can be cumbersome in public parking spaces.

Where the Ariya truly shines is in its interior design. While the Leaf’s interior has held up well over the years, it was often criticized for its cheap plastics and lackluster finish. In contrast, the Ariya’s interior exudes a sense of luxury and sophistication that has even led some to question its Nissan branding.

The fit and finish of the Ariya’s interior surpasses industry standards, with features such as heated and cooled leather seats adding comfort for long journeys. The blue suede accents further elevate the interior aesthetics, making it a standout feature of the vehicle. While the touchscreen infotainment system may not be groundbreaking, the inclusion of Apple CarPlay ensures seamless connectivity for drivers.

Overall, the Nissan Ariya represents a significant leap forward in terms of design, technology, and overall driving experience when compared to the Leaf. With its improved charging capabilities, upscale interior, and modern features, the Ariya sets a new standard for electric vehicles in the market.
