Nissan has made a significant move to make electric vehicles more accessible to the masses by slashing prices on their popular model, the Ariya. The company has reduced prices by over $8,000, thanks to the introduction of a new base model and federal grants.
The new base model, known as the Ariya Shiro, has been introduced to ensure eligibility for the UK’s electric car grant. Priced at £33,500 ($45,500) with the grant, this latest variant is now over £6,000 ($8,100) cheaper than the previous base model, which started at £39,645 ($53,800). The Ariya Shiro comes equipped with a smaller 63 kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of 251 miles (400 km).
Even the longer-range Ariya model has seen a price reduction, falling under the threshold for the electric car grant. Starting at £35,500 ($48,200), including the grant, this model features a larger 87 kWh battery that provides up to 329 miles of range. Only two Ariya models, the e-4ORCE AWD and Nismo variants, do not qualify for the grant.
Nissan’s UK marketing director, Fiona Mackay, stated that this is just the beginning of their efforts to make electric vehicles more affordable. The company plans to launch several highly anticipated EVs in the near future, including the new LEAF and the electric Juke, all of which will be built at its Sunderland, UK plant.
In addition to the Ariya, Nissan has also introduced the electric Micra, which is eligible for the grant, bringing prices down to just £21,495 ($29,200). The next-gen LEAF is expected to qualify for the higher £3,750 ($5,000) grant, further reducing the cost for consumers.
For those in the US, Nissan is also offering savings opportunities ahead of the $7,500 EV tax credit deadline, which expires at the end of September. In California, the 2025 Nissan Ariya ENGAGE FWD is available for lease starting at just $179 per month. Offers vary by region, but in several other states, it’s available from $329 per month.
Overall, Nissan’s efforts to make electric vehicles more affordable are commendable, and with more models on the horizon, it’s clear that the company is committed to driving the adoption of electric vehicles.
