Nissan in BEV production talks with Foxconn – reports

Japan’s Nissan Motor Company is currently in discussions with Taiwanese electronics company Hon Hai Technology Group, also known as Foxconn, to potentially produce battery electric vehicles (BEVs), as reported in Japan. Foxconn, renowned as Apple’s main iPhone outsourcing partner, has developed the MIH (Mobility in Harmony) modular BEV platform. This platform is specifically designed to offer global automakers a swift and cost-effective entry strategy into the BEV segment, supported by a readily available supply chain.

Earlier this year, Foxconn, through its subsidiary Foxtron Vehicle Technologies Company, inked an agreement with Mitsubishi Motors to collaborate on and manufacture a new BEV model based on the MIH open platform. The production of these vehicles is slated to commence in Taiwan in the second half of 2026, with plans to sell them locally and export them to markets in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand. Mitsubishi highlighted that the vehicle will boast exceptional driving performance and incorporate an advanced infotainment system.

In light of this partnership, Nissan is contemplating utilizing the MIH platform to produce BEVs at its Oppama plant in Kanagawa Prefecture. This plant had previously been marked for closure under Nissan’s recent restructuring plan. If the deal comes to fruition, it could not only secure the future of the Oppama plant but also assist the struggling automaker in positioning itself in Japan’s evolving BEV market.

As the automotive industry continues to embrace electric vehicles, collaborations like the one between Nissan and Foxconn signify a strategic approach towards innovation and sustainability. By leveraging Foxconn’s MIH platform, Nissan aims to enhance its offerings in the BEV segment while adapting to the shifting landscape of the automotive market.
