The Nissan Qashqai’s powertrain options offer a mixed bag of driving experiences, with the 1.3-litre mild-hybrid engine providing a somewhat lackluster performance. The 156bhp powertrain does offer decent torque at lower revs, but the turbocharged engine can feel sluggish when engaging the clutch, with the electric assistance not fully compensating for this initial lethargy. While the drivability is acceptable once the engine is pulling, it lacks immediate response and doesn’t rev eagerly beyond 4000rpm.
On the other hand, the full hybrid e-Power model delivers a smoother and more refined driving experience. The electric motor takes the lead in driving, resulting in smooth acceleration and strong regenerative braking. The three-cylinder petrol engine adds a slight thrum under load but overall, the e-Power system gives the Qashqai a more electric-like feel on the road.
In terms of performance, the e-Power setup emerges as the better option, offering a well-integrated and balanced powertrain for the Qashqai. In contrast, the mild-hybrid version falls short due to its low-rpm lethargy and average manual gearboxes. The gear shift quality is slightly notchy and the clutch pedal lacks feedback, making gear changes less smooth than desired.
The X-tronic CVT, while addressing the off-boost torpor of the engine, has its own drawbacks. It exhibits a surge in acceleration that doesn’t always align with driver inputs, and the integration with the start/stop system can result in juddering during engine cut-ins and cut-outs. Nissan’s efforts to tune the variable-compression petrol engine for better speed matching with the CVT gearbox haven’t entirely eliminated the monotonous engine sound.
Overall, the Qashqai could benefit from a more traditional torque-converter or DCT automatic gearbox, which could potentially improve power delivery and overall driving dynamics. Despite its shortcomings, the Qashqai remains a versatile and practical crossover option, with the e-Power model standing out as the more refined and efficient choice for drivers seeking a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience.
