Mercedes-Benz Prepares to Launch Electric Vans in New V-Class Range

Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to introduce the VLE, the first of a new generation of electric vans set to debut next year in the revamped V-Class lineup. The VLE is built on Mercedes’ innovative Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) and will offer a more specialized option compared to the current V-Class, which is based on the Vito van.

Positioned as the van equivalent of the E-Class saloon, the VLE will cater to large families and taxi companies, filling a niche below the luxurious VLS, known as the ‘grand limousine’ by Mercedes.

Testing for the VLE is currently underway in preparation for its upcoming launch. Recent tests have focused on validating the van’s efficiency and performance, including a rigorous drive from Stuttgart, Germany to Rome, Italy, crossing the challenging terrain of the Alps to test its endurance.

During the test, Mercedes engineers operated the vehicle under normal conditions, maintaining the cabin temperature at a comfortable 22 degrees Celsius throughout the journey. The van completed the 683-mile drive in 13 hours, making two 15-minute stops for recharging. This test suggests a real-world range of approximately 250 to 300 miles, although Mercedes has not yet released an official figure.

Andreas Zygan, head of development for Mercedes-Benz Vans, expressed confidence in the VLE’s practicality, stating, “Our future MPVs have once again demonstrated their suitability for everyday use.”

Aside from the eight-seat MPVs, the VLE is also expected to inspire specialized versions, such as an electric variant of the popular Marco Polo camper.
