ONYX RCR 80V electric moped now hits 65 MPH… with pedals!

ONYX Motors has recently unveiled the latest iteration of its popular RCR electric moped, following the brand’s resurgence last year. The new ONYX RCR 80V sets a new performance benchmark for the company, boasting increased power and speed capabilities that raise questions about the classification of these high-speed electric motorbikes with pedals.

The ONYX RCR 80V builds upon the foundation laid by its predecessor, the RCR LTD, with several enhancements, including a higher-voltage battery system. The new 80V setup replaces the previous 72V system, allowing for greater power and speed. The moped now surpasses its previous top speed of 60 mph, reaching speeds exceeding 65 mph. Additionally, the acceleration has been significantly improved, with the ability to reach 30 mph in just 1.7 seconds. The rear hub motor, rated at 8 kW nominally, can deliver a peak power output of 18 kW, enabling impressive acceleration.

Equipped with a sizable 3.6 kWh battery, the ONYX RCR 80V offers a range of approximately 55 miles in Sport mode and up to 130 miles in Eco mode. While the moped features functional pedals, they are not essential for powering the bike. In the event of a depleted battery, the bike can still be pedaled at low speeds, albeit with considerable effort.

The design of the ONYX RCR 80V draws inspiration from both bicycles and motorcycles, featuring an aluminum frame, hydraulic disc brakes, 17″ cast aluminum rims with 4″ fat tires, and suspension components for a smooth ride. The moped also includes a comfortable 16-inch bench seat with adjustable positioning, LED lighting, a TFT touch screen display, and a robust security system.

Priced at $4,699, the ONYX RCR 80V is available in three color options and offers a blend of performance and style. The moped’s high-speed capabilities cater to a growing demographic of young adults in the US who value powerful electric motorbikes as practical and enjoyable alternatives to traditional cars.

While the ONYX RCR 80V initially ships with speed and power limitations to comply with Class 2 electric bicycle regulations, owners have the option to register the moped as a motor-driven cycle or moped in states with specific guidelines. ONYX aims to work with legislators to establish standardized regulations for electric vehicles, promoting the adoption of electric two-wheeled transportation across the country.

In conclusion, the ONYX RCR 80V represents a bold step towards redefining electric two-wheeled transportation, offering a blend of performance, style, and practicality. Its high-speed capabilities and innovative design cater to a new generation of riders seeking a thrilling and sustainable mode of transportation.
