Peugeot boss calls on government to “stimulate” electric car sales

Peugeot CEO Calls for Government Support to Boost Electric Car Sales

Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson is urging the government to take action to stimulate the market for new and used electric cars, in order to speed up the transition from traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs).

During an interview with Autocar at the Brussels motor show, Jackson emphasized Peugeot’s commitment to electric mobility, highlighting the brand’s extensive range of eight passenger EV models – the largest among European manufacturers. She specifically praised the impressive 400-plus-mile ranges of the new e-3008 and e-5008 models, pointing to their real-world usability as a testament to Peugeot’s dedication to electric technology.

Furthermore, Jackson noted that Peugeot successfully met the UK’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate last year, achieving an EV sales mix of over 22%. In the UK, 31% of all new 3008 sales were for the electric version, demonstrating strong consumer interest in Peugeot’s electric offerings.

Despite Peugeot’s readiness for the future, Jackson emphasized the importance of government support in driving EV sales. She highlighted the need for state intervention to complement manufacturers’ efforts, stating, “There are only so many things we can do as a manufacturer. We need some help from governments to stimulate the market.”

Currently, the UK lacks government-backed incentives for private electric car buyers, despite ambitious ZEV mandates that require a significant increase in EV sales over the coming years. Jackson stressed the necessity of state support to achieve these targets, especially in the absence of incentives like the now-defunct plug-in car grant.

When asked about the type of support she envisions, Jackson refrained from specifics but stressed the need for measures to boost EV adoption. She explained, “What we’re looking for is something to stimulate the market.”

Industry experts, including former VW Group UK managing director Alex Smith, have echoed similar sentiments, calling for targeted incentives to accelerate the decarbonization of road transportation through the promotion of battery-electric vehicles.
