Posco opens new battery precursor plant in South Korea

Posco Future M Company, the battery materials unit of South Korea’s steel and chemicals group Posco Holdings, has recently completed the construction of a new precursor plant in Gwangyang, South Korea. This new plant marks a significant milestone for the company as it aims to reduce its dependence on cathode materials suppliers from China.

The new facility, located within the company’s existing cathode production complex in South Jeolla Province, has a production capacity of 45,000 tons of battery precursor materials per year. This capacity is enough to power approximately 500,000 electric vehicles, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

By establishing this new plant, Posco Future M has managed to create a battery cathode supply chain that is not reliant on raw materials from Chinese suppliers. The precursors produced at this facility will be used for high-nickel, cobalt, and manganese (NCM) cathodes, which will be shipped to Ultium Cells LLC, LG Energy Solution’s US battery manufacturing joint venture with General Motors.

Moreover, the new plant will also improve the company’s eligibility for US tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This act excludes battery materials sourced from “Foreign Entities of Concern” (FEOCs), such as China. By reducing its reliance on Chinese suppliers, Posco Future M aims to enhance its global competitiveness and strengthen its position in the market.

During the plant’s opening event, Posco Future M’s president, Eom Gi-chen, emphasized the significance of the new facility. He stated, “This facility allows us to build a fully independent supply chain for battery materials,” highlighting the company’s goal to reduce its dependence on Chinese suppliers and establish a more sustainable and competitive business model.

In conclusion, the completion of the new precursor plant in Gwangyang is a strategic move by Posco Future M to enhance its position in the battery materials market. By diversifying its supply chain and reducing its reliance on Chinese suppliers, the company is poised to strengthen its global presence and contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions.
