Range Rover is gearing up to launch its first electric luxury SUV, and it’s already making waves in the automotive industry. The company promises that the Range Rover Electric will be “the most capable electric luxury SUV” to hit the market, and early testing results seem to support that claim.
As the final testing phase wraps up, Range Rover’s first EV is exceeding expectations and outperforming its gas-powered counterparts. Prototypes of the electric SUV are currently undergoing rigorous testing in the United Arab Emirates, where they are facing extreme temperatures of up to 122F (50C) and 90% humidity. Despite these harsh conditions, the Range Rover Electric is delivering impressive results, surpassing the thermal testing performance of any other Range Rover vehicle on sand.
Thomas MĂĽller, Range Rover’s executive director of product engineering, has confirmed that the EV is even outperforming the iconic gas-powered models in certain instances. This is thanks to new traction control and thermal management systems that have been specifically engineered for the electric model.
One of the standout features of the Range Rover Electric is its Intelligent Torque Management system, which feeds power to each individual electric drive control. This technology reduces torque reaction time at each wheel from around 100 milliseconds to as little as 1 millisecond, resulting in impressive performance on various terrains.
During testing, the electric SUV tackled the 300-foot “Big Red” dune in the Al Badayer desert with ease, showcasing its capabilities in off-road environments. The Range Rover Electric is set to hit showrooms in 2025, and anticipation is high, with over 48,000 clients already on the waitlist.
With an expected wading depth of 33.8″ (850 mm), the Range Rover Electric surpasses competitors like the GMC Hummer EV in terms of water wading capabilities. Range Rover also has plans to launch a smaller Sport model and a compact electric SUV, likely the Range Rover Velar, in the near future.
