Regulatory filing: Xiaomi files for single-motor version of YU7, launch expected in summer

Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) is gearing up to launch its first SUV model, the YU7, with a single-motor variant recently filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). This comes on the heels of a filing for a dual-motor version last month, hinting at Xiaomi’s foray into the electric vehicle market.

The YU7 single-motor variant is set to be powered by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from BYD subsidiary, FinDreams Battery. In contrast, the dual-motor version, expected to launch in June or July, will feature Li-ion ternary batteries from CATL, a major player in the battery manufacturing industry.

The MIIT catalog listing for the YU7 includes details such as a peak power of 235 kW for the single-motor variant, along with dimensions matching those of the dual-motor version. With a top speed of 240 km/h and a weight of 2,315 kg, the YU7 aims to compete with other electric SUVs in the market.

In response to Tesla’s recent launch of the facelifted Model Y in China, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun hinted at the YU7’s competitive edge. A WeChat post by Tesla comparing the updated Model Y with other models prompted Lei Jun to simply respond with “OK” on Weibo, suggesting confidence in Xiaomi’s upcoming offering.

As Xiaomi prepares to enter the electric vehicle space, the YU7 will join the ranks of local competitors vying for market share against Tesla’s popular Model Y. With a focus on innovation and performance, Xiaomi aims to make a splash in the EV market with its dual-motor and single-motor variants of the YU7 SUV. Stay tuned for more updates on Xiaomi’s electric vehicle journey.
