New Renault 5 Electric Supermini Attracting High Conquest Rate
Renault has hit the mark with its latest electric supermini, the Renault 5, with an impressive 84% of buyers being new to the brand. This high conquest rate is one of the highest seen for any Renault model to date, showcasing the appeal of the retro-futuristic design and overall package of the vehicle.
A recent survey conducted by Renault in the UK revealed that the majority of Renault 5 buyers, out of around 1900 surveyed, were switching from competitor products. Specifically, 3.4% traded in a Mini Cooper, 3.8% swapped out of a Ford Fiesta, and 4.4% moved on from a Fiat 500. While these popular part-exchange models were similarly sized superminis, Renault UK managing director Adam Wood noted that there is no specific trend in terms of who is purchasing the electric supermini.
Wood mentioned that buyers are coming from various vehicle segments including premium SUVs and small cars, with the Renault 5 appealing to a wide range of consumers. The key factor driving the appeal of the Renault 5 is its striking design that exudes a sense of nostalgia and modernity, bringing joy to those who lay eyes on it.
According to Wood, emotion plays a significant role in the purchasing decision for the Renault 5, contributing to the high conquest rate seen for the model. The electric supermini has been a commercial success since its launch, with 2400 units delivered in the UK by the end of June. It also claimed the title of the best-selling EV to private buyers in April and May, solidifying Renault’s position as the country’s number-two retail EV brand, trailing behind Tesla.
The success of the Renault 5 has helped Renault increase its share of the UK car market to 3.7%, with registrations climbing 16% year-on-year in the first half of 2025. This growth can be attributed in part to a 17% increase in private car sales, showcasing the positive reception of the Renault 5 among consumers.
