Renault’s New Austral Hybrid: A Detailed Review

Renault has introduced its latest hybrid model, the Austral, powered by the E-Tech Full Hybrid powertrain. This innovative system combines a 129bhp 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine with a 67bhp front-mounted electric motor and a 34bhp integrated starter-generator, delivering a total output of 197bhp and 302lb ft of torque. Despite its modest 8.4-second 0-62mph time, the Austral offers a dynamic driving experience.

Similar to the Rafale, the Austral can operate in pure electric mode before the petrol engine kicks in for additional power. The initial acceleration may feel a bit sluggish due to the car’s weight of 1538kg, but switching to Sport mode enhances performance, especially during cornering and overtaking maneuvers.

Renault has fine-tuned the software for the Austral’s ‘multimodal’ automatic gearbox to improve responsiveness. The transition between the petrol engine and electric motor is seamless, allowing for extended pure electric driving even at higher speeds thanks to its substantial 1.7kWh battery capacity.

While there may be a slight delay in gear changes and some engine noise under heavy load, the Austral’s powertrain remains refined and well-insulated from the cabin. The addition of paddles behind the steering wheel controls the regenerative braking system, a unique feature for a hybrid vehicle.

Drivers may find the brake pedal to be overly sensitive when both braking systems are engaged, but deactivating regenerative braking provides a more natural pedal feel. Overall, the Austral’s hybrid powertrain rivals those of other leading manufacturers like Kia, Nissan, and Toyota.

Overall, the Renault Austral hybrid offers a smooth and efficient driving experience, blending the power of a petrol engine with the sustainability of an electric motor. With its updated technology and refined performance, the Austral is a strong contender in the hybrid market. Whether you’re looking for a comfortable daily driver or a capable eco-friendly vehicle, the Austral delivers on all fronts.
