Renault has unveiled three new electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs) that will feature a flexible, scalable architecture developed by Ampere around the SDV (Software Defined Vehicle). These models – Trafic, Estafette, and Goelette – are set to revolutionize the design, perception, and use of LCVs and will be showcased at the CV Show in Birmingham, UK on 29th April.
Traditionally, vehicles are designed around a chassis and either an internal combustion engine (ICE) or electric powertrain. Manufacturers then add on electronic features and pre-equipment packs for various functions and versions. However, Renault is introducing a new approach with Ampere’s SDV, which is based on a single platform with centralized software architecture and a connected, intelligent operating system.
This innovative approach reduces the number of ECUs in a vehicle, providing better performance and integration of new features. The SDV architecture uses high-performance computers as the vehicle’s brain, processing data from onboard sensors, driver aids, powertrain, chassis control, and multimedia/connectivity services. These computers can be upgraded with new functions to modernize the vehicle or extend its service life.
Renault’s new approach will allow Trafic, Estafette, and Goelette users to upgrade their vehicles in real-time, similar to updating a laptop or phone. Personalized offers based on individual usage and driving habits will enhance the user experience. For business users, specific functions such as ambulances, fire engines, police vehicles, and refrigerated vehicles can have dedicated apps for centralized operation.
Predictive maintenance will be more precise with the SDV architecture, allowing real-time tracking of wear and tear on vehicle parts and remote diagnostics for repairs. This feature will benefit fleet managers by optimizing costs, uptime, and vehicle availability. Additionally, updating software over the cloud will increase the value of SDVs, as older vehicles will retain higher residual value due to enhanced functions.
Developed in partnership with Flexis and built in France at the Renault Sandouville plant, Trafic, Estafette, and Goelette represent a new era in LCV design and technology. The presentation at the CV Show in Birmingham will showcase the groundbreaking features of these electric LCVs, setting a new standard in the industry.
