Renault’s Head of Design, Gilles Vidal, recently provided some insight into the upcoming style of the brand’s SUVs in an interview with the British magazine Autocar. Vidal mentioned that the new models will feature lower bodies and a more sporty design starting from 2028, drawing inspiration from the Emblème Concept.
The Emblème Concept will serve as the blueprint for the brand’s future SUVs, with a bold design and slightly lower body compared to traditional SUVs. Vidal emphasized that the new philosophy will focus on generous shapes, simplicity, and a departure from the minimalist approach seen in recent models like the Scènic.
In a surprising move, Vidal revealed that the design of estates will influence Renault’s new SUVs. Despite estates losing market share to SUVs, Vidal sees potential in their sexy shapes, lower roof lines, and spacious load areas for balancing space, practicality, and range in future electric SUVs.
Addressing the backlash against SUVs, especially in European cities like Paris, Vidal acknowledged the criticism but defended SUVs’ reputation. He questioned why SUVs face scrutiny while MPVs with similar characteristics go unquestioned as family-friendly vehicles.
The new design philosophy of “SUVs with less SUV flair” will primarily apply to electric models from 2028. Retro models like the Renault 4, Renault 5, and Twingo will maintain their timeless identity, similar to Fiat’s approach with the 500.
The upcoming changes in Renault’s design language signify a shift towards a more dynamic and versatile lineup of vehicles. With a blend of modern aesthetics and practicality, Renault aims to cater to a wide range of customers while staying true to its heritage.
