Rivian to build supplier park in Illinois

Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive has announced plans to build a $120m supplier park next to its EV manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, US. This move is aimed at streamlining material supply processes for Rivian’s EV production.

The supplier park is expected to house essential suppliers, creating nearly 100 direct positions at Rivian. This development will not only support Rivian’s production but also lead to job creation in the region.

Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe expressed excitement about the supplier park, stating that it will play a crucial role in increasing production at the plant in 2026. The park will accommodate suppliers who will engage in light assembly and manufacturing, with Rivian employees managing the kitting and sequencing of parts.

To ensure efficient operations, the supplier park will be connected to the main plant via an underground tunnel, reducing traffic on local roads. The State of Illinois is providing support for Rivian’s expansion through incentives such as assistance with start-up costs, infrastructure improvements, and tax credits tied to job creation.

Illinois Governor Pritzker highlighted the significance of Rivian’s investment in creating an ecosystem for electric vehicles, attracting global suppliers to invest in the state and create high-paying jobs. The Town of Normal is also contributing to the project by improving roads and supporting utility infrastructure with future tax reimbursements.

Rivian’s Normal plant currently produces a range of EVs, including the R1S all-electric SUV, R1T all-electric truck, Amazon Electric Delivery Van, and the Rivian Commercial Van. In addition to the supplier park, Rivian is expanding the plant for R2 manufacturing, scheduled to commence in 2026.

In February, Rivian reported its first quarterly gross profit of $170m for Q4 2024, a significant improvement from the previous year. This turnaround can be attributed to better management of variable costs, revenue per delivered unit, and fixed costs.

Overall, Rivian’s investment in the supplier park and plant expansion demonstrates its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and growth in the EV industry. With ongoing support from the state and local authorities, Rivian is poised to further establish itself as a key player in the clean energy economy.
