SGMW Celebrates Milestone with 30 Millionth Vehicle Produced

On January 5, the SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture marked a significant achievement as its 30 millionth vehicle, the Wuling Starlight S, rolled off the production line. This milestone solidifies SGMW as the first Chinese automaker to reach cumulative production and sales of 30 million vehicles.

Looking back at the joint venture’s journey, in 2013, SGMW celebrated its 10 millionth vehicle production, followed by the 20 millionth vehicle milestone in 2019. Now, in 2025, the production of the 30 millionth vehicle highlights the continued growth and success of SGMW.

SGMW attributes a large part of its achievement to the focus on new energy vehicles (NEVs). In 2024, the joint venture launched 10 NEV models, with NEV sales surpassing 800,000 vehicles, accounting for over 50% of total sales. This marked a 63% year-on-year increase in NEV sales. As of the end of 2024, SGMW’s cumulative NEV sales exceeded 2.4 million units.

Expanding its reach globally, SGMW has been a key player in SAIC’s export strategy, with exports to nearly 40 countries. The joint venture was the first Chinese automaker to establish a factory in Indonesia and has introduced nine models in the market. Notably, Wuling became the first Chinese automaker to commence power battery production in Indonesia on December 31, 2024.

Looking towards the future, SGMW has ambitious plans to introduce a new architecture platform to accommodate higher-end models, set to launch in the first half of 2025. In terms of smart driving technology, SGMW aims to integrate Zhuoyue’s intelligent driving system upgrades, including algorithms and chips, into its models, with a focus on enhancing the Baojun brand.

As SGMW continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the joint venture remains a pioneering force in the Chinese automotive industry, setting new benchmarks and pushing boundaries in vehicle production and technology.
