Shenzhen, a bustling city in southern China, has solidified its position as the country’s top vehicle producer in 2024. According to Tang Shangxing, deputy director of Shenzhen’s NEV industry office, the city produced an impressive 2,935,300 new energy vehicles (NEVs) during the year. This remarkable feat underscores Shenzhen’s pivotal role in China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market.

One of the key players driving this production surge is BYD, China’s largest NEV maker, which is headquartered in Shenzhen. With a massive production base in the city boasting a planned annual capacity of 1 million vehicles, BYD has been a driving force behind Shenzhen’s success in the NEV industry.

In 2024, BYD reported impressive sales figures, with 4,272,145 NEVs sold and 4,304,073 produced throughout the year. Notably, the company’s Xi’an plant in Shaanxi province played a significant role in this production, churning out over 1 million vehicles in 2024 alone.

The city of Shenzhen has also been making strides in infrastructure development to support the growing demand for electric vehicles. In fact, Shenzhen now boasts nearly twice as many supercharging stations as traditional gas stations, highlighting its commitment to promoting sustainable transportation options.

As the NEV industry continues to expand and evolve, Shenzhen remains at the forefront of innovation and production. With BYD leading the charge and the city’s robust infrastructure in place, Shenzhen is poised to remain a powerhouse in China’s electric vehicle market for years to come.
