Stellantis to use ABB’s technology for DS N°8 electric SUV production

Stellantis has recently announced its partnership with ABB to implement PixelPaint technology for precision paint finishes on DS Automobiles’ new DS N°8 all-electric flagship. This innovative technology, in collaboration with mono coat paint from Nippon Paint, will be utilized at Stellantis’ Melfi plant in Italy to create the duo-tone paintwork for the DS N°8 flagship.

Expected to be operational in the second half of 2025, PixelPaint is set to enhance production efficiency and sustainability. Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line, emphasized the advantages of PixelPaint, stating that it is increasingly favored by top automotive designers for creating extraordinary finishes.

Traditionally, achieving the deep-black duo-tone paintwork for the DS N°8 would involve laborious and energy-intensive processes. However, PixelPaint eliminates the need for complex manual masking and multiple trips to the paintshop. This technology utilizes a paint head with over 1,000 individually controlled nozzles, mounted on ABB robots like the IRB 5500 paint series. With the integration of a 3D vision system and ABB’s RobotStudio software, precise paint application without overspray is ensured, aligning with DS Automobiles’ sustainability goals.

Silvio Licitra, Stellantis’ Head of Paint Process Engineering, praised the DS N°8 for redefining the French Art of Travel with its sleek contours and ultra-modern duo-tone paintwork. ABB’s PixelPaint is instrumental in achieving this fusion of design and sustainability, embodying technological excellence and refined aesthetics.

Inspired by DS Automobiles’ DS Aero Sport Lounge concept SUV, the DS N°8 offers a combined range of 750km (WLTP cycle) and over 500km on the motorway. The flagship’s cockpit sets new standards for comfort and represents a new French art of travel, with advanced connectivity driven by artificial intelligence for a seamless in-car experience.

Furthermore, DS N°8 utilizes the Stellantis Group’s STLA Medium platform, a battery-electric vehicle platform specifically designed for the C and D segments. This platform ensures optimal performance and efficiency for the flagship electric vehicle.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Stellantis and ABB to implement PixelPaint technology for the DS N°8 highlights a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in the automotive industry. The integration of cutting-edge technology and design aesthetics sets a new standard for electric vehicles, showcasing the potential for future advancements in the automotive sector.
