Suzuki President Rejects Plans for Electric or Hybrid Jimny

Suzuki’s president has made it clear that the brand has no intentions of producing an electric or hybrid version of the beloved Jimny, stating that electrifying the 4×4 would detract from its essence.

Since its debut in 1970, the Jimny has garnered a dedicated following in the UK. The release of its fourth generation in 2018 solidified its status as a cult classic.

While there have been calls to bring the Jimny back to the UK following its discontinuation in 2020, stringent emissions regulations have posed a significant challenge. In Europe, the Jimny is currently only available as a Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV).

Speculation arose when Suzuki released silhouette images of their upcoming electric vehicles, hinting at a potential electric counterpart to the Jimny. A hybrid version has also been a topic of discussion.

However, during the launch of the eVitara, Suzuki’s first electric vehicle, Toshihiro Suzuki dispelled any rumors of an electric Jimny. He expressed concerns that an electric version would compromise the Jimny’s key strengths, particularly its optimal weight distribution.

Instead, Suzuki emphasized the brand’s commitment to catering to professionals with the Jimny line. He suggested exploring alternative fuel options such as e-fuel or biofuel that utilize internal combustion engine (ICE) technology to ensure the Jimny’s longevity in the market.
