Tesla’s Self-Driving Division Sees New Hire Amidst Leadership Exodus

Tesla has recently made headlines in the realm of self-driving technology with the hiring of Henry Kuang, the former ‘Head of Autonomy’ at GM’s self-driving startup, Cruise. This move comes at a time when Tesla has been facing challenges in retaining top talent within its Autopilot and self-driving division, with a notable list of leaders who have left the company in recent years.

Some of the key figures who have departed from Tesla’s self-driving efforts include Sterling Anderson, Chris Lattner, Jim Keller, Andrej Karpathy, Zheng Gao, Marc Van Impe, Drew Baglino, David Lau, Milan Kovac, and Omead Afshar. These departures have raised concerns about turnover and leadership stability within Tesla’s self-driving division.

While Tesla has faced difficulties in securing high-profile hires, the company has been known to prefer hiring younger, more junior engineers and promoting from within. However, recent reports have indicated that Tesla has been grappling with a culture problem within its workforce, which has impacted employee morale and brand perception.

In the midst of these challenges, Tesla has managed to make a rare executive-level hire in its self-driving division with the addition of Henry Kuang. Kuang, a former Facebook engineer who joined Cruise in 2020, has been appointed as the “Director of AI and Deep Learning for Autonomous Driving” at Tesla. His expertise in leading the perception team at Cruise and his experience in autonomous technology make him a valuable addition to Tesla’s self-driving efforts.

Cruise, founded in 2013 and acquired by GM in 2016, has had its share of struggles in the self-driving space, with a series of accidents and failures leading to the withdrawal of its self-driving fleet in 2023. GM announced plans to discontinue funding for Cruise in December and restructure the company to focus on ADAS operations for consumer vehicles.

Kuang’s move from Cruise to Tesla signals a significant shift in the self-driving landscape, as Tesla continues to innovate and push the boundaries of autonomous technology. With Kuang’s expertise and experience, Tesla is poised to further enhance its self-driving capabilities and solidify its position as a leader in the autonomous vehicle market.
