Tesla is buffing Foundation Series badges off Cybertrucks to sell them as regular trucks

Tesla is facing some challenges with its Cybertruck sales in the US, prompting the company to take some unique steps to address the issue. The electric car manufacturer is now converting some of its Foundation Series Cybertrucks into regular Cybertrucks for sale, as well as sending hundreds of US Cybertrucks to be homologated in Canada in an effort to boost sales.

Recent reports suggest that Tesla has worked through its Cybertruck reservation backlog and is now struggling to maintain demand for the vehicle. This was evident when Tesla informed employees at Gigafactory Texas to take a few days off from the Cybertruck production line, signaling a slowdown in production.

To address the issue, Tesla has reduced lease pricing and offered direct discounts on the Cybertruck, including many Foundation Series models that are readily available for immediate delivery. Foundation Series Cybertrucks were the first batch produced for reservation holders, but Tesla is now looking to convert these models into regular Cybertrucks by removing the $20,000 bundle of features and accessories that were initially added.

In addition to converting the Foundation Series Cybertrucks, Tesla plans to modify over 800 vehicles to meet Canadian market regulations and ship them to Canada, where the company believes they will have a better chance of selling. These efforts are putting pressure on Tesla’s service and collision center workforce, leading to longer wait times for owners in need of repairs or maintenance.

Looking ahead, the success of the Cybertruck program will be tested next year without the backlog of reservations to rely on. Tesla will be introducing a cheaper $61,000 RWD Cybertruck to attract more buyers, but it remains to be seen whether the company can achieve its goal of selling 250,000 units per year. With increasing competition in the electric pickup truck market, Tesla may need to reassess its sales strategy to maintain its position as a leader in the industry.

In conclusion, while the Cybertruck initially saw success as the best-selling electric pickup truck in the US, Tesla is now facing challenges in maintaining demand for the vehicle. By converting Foundation Series models into regular Cybertrucks and exploring new markets like Canada, Tesla is taking proactive steps to address these issues and ensure the long-term success of the Cybertruck program.
