Tesla Megafactory in Shanghai to officially start production on Feb 11

Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory, which specializes in energy storage products, is set to officially begin production in just a week, following trial production that started towards the end of 2024.

According to reports from local media outlet Shanghai Securities News, Tesla is planning a ceremony to mark the official start of production at the Shanghai Megafactory on February 11. The factory will gradually increase its production capacity throughout the first quarter.

The completion of the factory’s construction in just seven months has set a new standard for efficiency, known as “Tesla Speed.” This marks a significant milestone for Tesla, as the Shanghai Megafactory is the company’s first energy storage project located outside of the United States.

Construction of the Megafactory commenced on May 23, 2024, with the factory situated in the Lingang district of Pudong, Shanghai. This district is also home to Tesla’s EV factory in China, where the popular Model 3 and Model Y vehicles are produced.

The Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group was the first customer in China to place orders for the Megafactory’s product, Megapack, at a ceremony held last May. The Megapack is an ultra-large commercial energy storage battery designed to be supplied to the global market.

Tesla’s energy storage product lineup includes the Powerwall, Powerpack, and Megapack, with the Shanghai Megafactory mainly focusing on the production of the Megapack. This battery can store over 3 MWh of energy, enough to power 3,600 homes for an hour, and plays a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and preventing power outages.

It was reported last year that CATL was selected as the main supplier of battery cells for Tesla’s Shanghai Megapack, with BYD’s FinDreams Battery serving as an alternative supplier. This strategic partnership ensures a steady supply of battery cells for the Megapack production.

With mass production expected to begin in early 2025, the Shanghai Megafactory is on track to produce up to 10,000 units of Megapack per year, totaling nearly 40 GWh of energy storage. This significant capacity will be instrumental in meeting the growing demand for energy storage solutions in the market.

Overall, the Shanghai Megafactory represents a significant step forward for Tesla in expanding its energy storage capabilities globally and further solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable energy solutions.
