Tesla’s Model Y sales in China hit a record high for the year in September, with the Shanghai-built crossover being the focus of deliveries to local consumers. The data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) revealed that retail sales of the Model Y in China reached 48,202 units last month, marking the highest monthly sales figure of the year so far.
This impressive sales performance comes despite increasing competition from local rivals in the Chinese market. The September sales figure represents a 6.34 percent increase from August and a 16.35 percent increase from the same month last year. Overall, Tesla sold 72,200 vehicles in China in September, surpassing the previous month’s sales and setting a new yearly high.
The Model Y accounted for a significant portion of Tesla’s retail sales in China last month, contributing 66.76 percent of the total sales. In the January-September period, Model Y retail sales in China reached 337,648 units, up 5.48 percent year-on-year and accounting for 73.37 percent of Tesla’s total sales in the country during the same period.
Tesla’s factory in Shanghai serves as a production hub for the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, catering to both local and export markets. The company follows a production schedule where cars are manufactured for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half.
In September, Giga Shanghai exported 2,950 Model Y units, a significant decrease from the same month last year but still contributing to Tesla China’s export volume. From January to September, the factory exported a total of 68,197 Model Y units, accounting for a considerable portion of Tesla’s exports from China.
In addition to the Model Y, Tesla’s Model 3 sedan also saw strong sales in China in September. Retail sales of the Model 3 reached 23,998 units, the highest since September 2022. This marked a significant increase from the same month last year and from August, with the Model 3 contributing 33.24 percent of Tesla’s sales in China in September.
Overall, China-made Model Y sales in September totaled 51,152 units, while China-made Model 3 sales reached 37,169 units. Despite a slight decrease in year-on-year sales for the Model Y, the Model 3 saw a significant increase in sales compared to the same period last year.
With strong sales figures for both the Model Y and Model 3, Tesla continues to solidify its position in the Chinese electric vehicle market. The company’s focus on local production and delivery strategies has proven successful, with the Model Y emerging as a top choice among Chinese consumers.
