Elon Musk Reveals Plans for Unsupervised Full Self-Driving Cars
During a recent event, Elon Musk made a bold statement about the future of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology. “We’ll move from supervised Full Self-Driving to unsupervised Full Self-Driving, where you can fall asleep and wake up at your destination,” Musk said. “It’s going to be a glorious future.”
Musk envisions a future where the Cybercab and Robovan will operate similarly to popular ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt. Users will be able to summon a vehicle using a mobile app, and Musk even hinted at the possibility of owners being able to hire out their autonomous cars.
The Cybercab has been a long-term project for Tesla, as Musk aims to transform the company from a car manufacturer to a robotics powerhouse. However, the unveiling of the Cybercab comes after similar concepts like Mate Rimac’s Verne robotaxi, and four years later than Musk’s initial target for a fleet of robotaxis.
While companies like Waymo, Cruise, and Deeproute.ai already operate driverless taxis in various cities, none currently offer the level of full autonomy (level five) that Musk plans for the Cybercab and Robovan.
Musk’s hesitance to provide a specific launch date for the Cybercab reflects the reality that Tesla’s products often hit the market later than initially projected. “I tend to be a little optimistic with timeframes,” Musk joked during the Cybercab’s unveiling.
