Tesla’s sales in China saw a significant increase in March, with the company selling 74,127 vehicles in the domestic market, marking an 18.80 percent year-on-year increase and a substantial 176.83 percent jump from February. In the first quarter of the year, Tesla’s retail sales in China totaled 134,607 units, reflecting a 1.65 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
The surge in sales can be attributed to the end of the slow season at the beginning of the year, as Tesla China reported selling a total of 78,828 vehicles in March, including 4,701 units for export. The company’s Shanghai factory, which produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, serves both local customers and acts as an export hub.
In March, exports from the Shanghai plant declined by 82.37 percent compared to the previous year but increased by 20.20 percent from February. Overall sales, including exports, were down by 11.49 percent from the previous year but showed a significant 156.87 percent increase from February.
The wholesale sales of the Model Y in March totaled 49,029 units, a decrease of 14.86 percent year-on-year but a remarkable 510.42 percent increase from February. Similarly, the wholesale sales of the Model 3, including exports, amounted to 29,799 units, showing a 5.33 percent decrease year-on-year but a 31.53 percent increase from the previous month.
Tesla’s contribution to China’s passenger new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales in March was notable, accounting for 7.48 percent of the total sales and 11.47 percent of battery electric vehicle (BEV) retail sales. The overall NEV retail sales in China for March reached 991,000 units, marking a 37.93 percent year-on-year increase and a 44.46 percent increase from February.
In the first quarter, Tesla’s retail sales in China totaled 134,607 units, representing a 1.65 percent increase year-on-year but a 31.64 percent decrease from the previous quarter. Despite the quarter-on-quarter decline, Tesla’s sales in China contributed significantly to the company’s global deliveries, accounting for 39.98 percent of the 336,681 deliveries in the first quarter.
Furthermore, the Shanghai factory exported 38,147 units in the first quarter, reflecting a 56.87 percent decrease compared to the previous year. Overall, Tesla’s performance in the Chinese market demonstrates the company’s strong presence and continued growth in the region.
