Tesla’s Model Y Refresh to Start Mass Production in China Next Month
The highly anticipated refreshed Model Y, codenamed Juniper, is set to begin mass production in China next month. Similar to the refreshed “Highland” Model 3, the new Model Y is expected to bring several improvements and updates to the popular electric SUV.
Reports from local news site LatePost, and subsequently shared by CnEVPost, have confirmed that production of the new Model Y will kick off in January. This news comes amidst the departure of Song Gang, the former director of Tesla’s Shanghai factory, adding more intrigue to the upcoming launch.
The refreshed Model Y is rumored to include many of the enhancements seen in the 2023 Model 3 refresh. These upgrades are expected to include a new front-end design, improved efficiency, and a quieter cabin. Additionally, interior improvements are likely to be featured, although it has been noted that the controversial deletion of steering column stalks may also be present in the new Model Y.
Recent sightings and leaks have further fueled anticipation for the refreshed Model Y. Sightings of camouflaged prototypes and leaked images have been circulating, with a brief video even surfacing last week in San Jose. Chinese social media has also hinted at the imminent production of the new Model Y, with reports suggesting that trial production was set to begin in October.
In addition to the refreshed Model Y, rumors of a 6-seat variant have also surfaced, with production expected to commence in Shanghai in the fourth quarter of 2025. However, details on delivery timelines remain scarce, leaving enthusiasts to speculate on when the new Model Y will make its way to different markets.
When considering delivery timelines, it’s worth noting that the Model 3 refresh initially started deliveries overseas before reaching the US market. If a similar pattern is followed for the Model Y, US customers may have to wait a few months before receiving their vehicles.
While Tesla has remained tight-lipped about the exact launch date of the new Model Y, recent reports indicate that the company had previously stated there would be “no Model Y refresh this year.” With the end of the year fast approaching, it seems that the refreshed Model Y could hit the market sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated release.
