Tesla stops taking orders for Model S, Model X in China amid trade war

Tesla has made a significant decision in the Chinese market by stopping orders for its Model S and Model X vehicles. This move is believed to be influenced by the escalating trade war between the US and China, which has directly impacted these imported models.

Previously, customers in China could place orders for the Model S and Model X with estimated delivery times ranging from three to eight months. However, the “Order Now” button on Tesla’s China website has now been replaced with a “View Now” button, indicating a halt in new orders for these models.

On the other hand, the pages for the locally produced Model 3 and Model Y continue to display unchanged information. Tesla began delivering updated versions of the Model S and Model X imported from the US in China in March 2023. These premium models have been among the highest-priced electric vehicles in the Chinese market.

The trade tensions between the US and China have led to a spike in tariffs on US imports, reaching 84 percent as a retaliatory measure. This has likely contributed to Tesla’s decision to suspend orders for the Model S and Model X in China. It is worth noting that these two models have not significantly contributed to Tesla’s global deliveries, with the Model 3 and Model Y accounting for 96 percent of first-quarter deliveries.

Despite the suspension of orders for the Model S and Model X in China, Tesla has no current plans to remove these models from its lineup. The company’s vice president of vehicle engineering, Lars Moravy, hinted at introducing updated versions of the Model S and Model X later in 2025 during a podcast appearance.

In addition to China, Tesla has also ceased accepting custom orders for new Model S and Model X vehicles in Japan since March 31. This decision aligns with Tesla’s focus on strengthening its position in key markets while navigating the challenges posed by the ongoing trade disputes.

Tesla’s strategic moves in response to the trade war underscore the company’s adaptability and commitment to delivering innovative electric vehicles to customers worldwide. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Tesla remains at the forefront of innovation and sustainability.
