Tesla has announced its plans to deploy V4 Superchargers in China starting in 2025, with a promise to open them up to other brands as well. This move comes as part of the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s commitment to expanding its charging infrastructure and making it more accessible to a wider range of EVs.
The V4 Superchargers utilize Tesla’s latest charging technology, designed to optimize the charging experience for EV owners. These next-generation chargers will be compatible with a variety of third-party models, including upcoming releases in the market.
Tesla first introduced the V4 Superchargers in the United States in October 2023, marking them as the company’s fastest and most powerful charging devices to date. With the capability to charge up to 500 kW, these Superchargers offer a significant improvement in charging speed and efficiency.
Currently, Tesla boasts a global network of over 60,000 Superchargers, with more than 11,500 located in mainland China alone. The company has been steadily expanding its charging network since entering the Chinese market in 2013, with milestones including the completion of its Shanghai Supercharger factory in February 2021.
The Shanghai factory, covering nearly 5,000 square meters, serves as a hub for Supercharger production and research and development. With an initial annual capacity of 10,000 Superchargers, the facility primarily focuses on manufacturing V3 chargers, capable of adding up to 250 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes.
In December 2022, Tesla celebrated the inauguration of its 10,000th Supercharger in mainland China, underscoring the company’s commitment to expanding its charging infrastructure in the region. Furthermore, in April 2023, Tesla made headlines by opening up its Supercharger network to other EV brands in China, following similar moves in over 10 other markets.
With the upcoming deployment of V4 Superchargers in China and the promise of opening them up to other brands, Tesla is setting the stage for a more interconnected and accessible EV charging ecosystem. As the EV market continues to grow and evolve, Tesla’s commitment to innovation and collaboration is poised to shape the future of electric mobility in China and beyond.
