In Europe, the first quarter of 2025 saw a significant increase in registrations of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). BEV registrations surged by 28% to reach 578,990 sales, marking the highest volume ever recorded in a single quarter. PHEVs also experienced growth, with a 5.8% improvement year on year, totaling 268,601 deliveries.
The standout performer in the BEV market was the Tesla Model Y, which emerged as the best-selling BEV in Europe with 30,407 registrations. The UK led the region in Model Y deliveries, followed by France. The Tesla Model 3 also made a strong showing, capturing a 4% market share with 23,388 sales. The Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq followed closely behind, rounding out the top four positions in the BEV market.
March was a particularly strong month for PHEVs, with a significant increase in deliveries. The Volvo XC60 emerged as the top-selling PHEV in Europe for the first quarter, followed by the Ford Kuga and VW Tiguan. The BYD Seal U made significant gains, securing the fourth position with its best-ever quarterly performance.
In terms of individual models, the Ford Kuga reclaimed the top spot as the best-selling PHEV in Europe in March, with 6,496 registrations. The BYD Seal U and Volvo XC60 followed closely behind in second and third place, respectively.
Overall, the European EV market saw record results in the first quarter of 2025, with strong performances from both BEVs and PHEVs. The Tesla Model Y led the BEV segment, while the Volvo XC60 dominated the PHEV market. With a diverse range of models achieving success, the European EV market continues to show promising growth and adoption of electric vehicles.
